The Professional Education Unit of the School of Media and Communication, Pan-Atlantic University (SMC) hosted the Post AWARES AWARD ceremony on Sunday, 10th October 2021, at the Omu Resort, Lekki-Epe, Expressway, Lagos.
Platforms Africa reports that the event, sponsored by Chevron Nigeria Limited was to recognise and reward Chevron-sponsored journalists of the Advanced Writing and Reporting Skills (AWARES) Certificate Course from 2014 till 2020.
The award winners including the Team Lead, Platforms Africa, Adeola Yusuf, were adjudged as consistent excellent performers in their journalistic activities by a team of academic and professional judges put together by the SMC.

Fourteen journalists from the print and electronic media won awards and the selection of the award recipients was based on seven criteria listed below:
Organization– Writing shows high degree of attention to logic and reasoning of points. Unity clearly leads the reader to the conclusion and stirs thought regarding the topic.
Level of Content– Content indicates synthesis of ideas, in-depth analysis and evidences original thought and support for the topic.
Development– Main points well developed with high quality and quantity support. Reveals high degree of critical thinking.
Grammar & Mechanics– Essay is free of distracting spelling, punctuation, and grammatical errors; absent of fragments, comma splices, and run-ons.

Style– Shows outstanding style going beyond usual college level; rhetorical devices and tone used effectively; creative use of sentence structure and coordination.
Format– Meets all paragraph formats and requirements and evidences attention to detail; there is a smooth flow between paragraphs that enhances logical flow. Every paragraph is essential to the story.
Clear Focus and Unity (deals with content)– Focus of story is clear; nothing detracts from primary focus; everything contributes to overall angle.
Chevron Nigeria Limited pioneered the AWARES programme in collaboration with the SMC in 2014 to foster partnership with the media and facilitate capacity building of the media practitioners to enhance their skills in performing their duties. Over 100 journalists have benefitted from the programme since its inception in 2014 and the participants have continued to attest to the positive impact of the training on their skills development in Journalism.
