5 Animals That Die After Giving Birth

Maternal mortality is the death of a mother after giving birth. This tragic and devastating event that can have a profound impact on the family, particularly the newborn and the father, is not peculiar to human. It is, in fact, the permanent condition in some animal.

1. Praying Mantises

Praying Mantises are one of the animals that die after giving birth. After the female mantis lay her eggs, she dies soon afterwards

2. Salmon

After spawning, most female salmon undergo psychological changes that result in their death within a few weeks.

3. Social Spider

Social spider live in large groups and cooperate in order to build and maintain their Webs. These spider typically die soon after they mate and produce offsprings

4. Octopus

Most octopus are semelparous, which means they reproduce only once in their life time. Once the egg hatch the female octopus usually die shortly afterwards due to exhaustion

5. Scorpion

Scorpions are one of the few animals that die after giving birth. During this period the female may stop feeding and eventually die, providing nutrients to her offspring through cannibalistic feeding
