MSSN Marks 70th Anniversary, Seeks Digital Literacy Enhancement For Muslim

The Muslim Students’ Society Of Nigeria (MSSN) celebrate its 70th Platinum anniversary and special recognition award held at the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research, Yaba, Lagos.

Speaking at the well-attended event, Senator Ajibola Basiru, the chairman of the occasion and National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), reflected on how the formation of the MSSN was a revolutionary development during colonial rule.

He addressed the historical spread of falsehood against Islam and encouraged Muslims to use innovative methods to promote the religion, as long as they align with Islamic principles. He emphasized the need to make Islam appealing to younger generations while maintaining its core values.

Former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Prof. Isa Ali Pantami, urged the current leadership of the Muslim Students Society of Nigeria (MSSN) to build on the sacrifices and notable achievements of its founders by ensuring that Muslims receive their due rights and privileges in the country.

He stressed the need for Muslims to demonstrate exemplary conduct in order to help restore the nation’s lost glory.

The former Minister delivered this message during his goodwill address at the event.

Prof. Pantami, who joined virtually from Rabat, Morocco, expressed admiration for the MSSN’s continued success in promoting Islam despite numerous challenges.

He thanked the MSSN Lagos Area Unit for their collaboration and urged attendees to dedicate themselves to serving Allah and humanity in order to attain eternal rewards.

The First Lady of Lagos State, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, described the MSSN’s 70-year existence as a significant milestone.

Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, who was represented by Mrs. Tawakalit Toriola, commended the society’s role in advancing education among the youth and contributing to the nation’s future.

She urged the MSSN to persist in promoting peaceful coexistence, discipline, and hard work.

The Guest Speaker, Dr. Mustapha Ade Bello from the Department of Religious Studies at LASU, urged the Muslim Ummah and MSS members to unite as one family to strengthen brotherhood and solidarity, free from polarization in the union today.

He emphasized that minimizing divisiveness and theological differences is essential for the progress of Muslims in the country.

Dr. Bello emphasized the need for Dawwah to be fully revived on campuses, advocating for inclusivity by welcoming those interested in embracing Islam.

He noted that the MSS was established during a period when socio-economic conditions were unfavorable to Islam, recalling that some Muslims had to change their names or even convert to Christianity to gain school admission.

Dr. Bello explained that the MSS was founded to promote good conduct and condemn evil, without bias towards any Islamic sect, but rather to unite Muslims as one family.

He urged Muslims to come together and engage in various societal activities, including politics, and to leverage social media to correct misconceptions and positively represent Islam.

In his welcome address, Yusuf Nurudeen Adekola, the Amir of the MSS Lagos Area Unit, said the celebration marked 70 years of unwavering commitment to the good of the Muslim community.

The Amir noted that the MSS had become a beacon of hope for students in Nigeria and added that the Awards of Legends and Philanthropic recognition were given to individuals who played a crucial role in sustaining the organization and setting a positive example for the younger generation.

He also underscored the society’s major project, the Digital Centre in Igando, which seeks to enhance digital literacy within the Muslim community and requires around #250 million to make it a reality.

In his goodwill message, Dr. Muiz Banire urged the MSS leadership to uphold the vision of the society’s founders and stressed the importance of time management among Muslims.

Barr. Musbau Oyefeso, a member of the MSS Board of Trustees, appealed for the support of affluent Muslims and well-meaning Nigerians to help achieve the society’s ambitious projects.
