President Bola Tinubu has scrapped both the Ministry of Niger Delta and the Ministry of Sports Development.

The president made the announcement Wednesday during the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting according to a statement by Bayo Onanuga, the president’s spokesperson.

The National Sports Commission (NSC) will now assume the duties previously managed by the sports ministry.

Additionally, the FEC has approved the merger of the Ministry of Tourism with the Ministry of Culture and Creative Economy.

Onanuga in a statement said, “President Tinubu and Federal Executive Council scrap Niger Delta Ministry and the Ministry of sports development.

“There will now be a ministry of regional development to oversee all the regional development commissions, such as Niger Delta Development Commission, North West Development Commission, South West Development Commission , North East Development Commission.

“The National Sports Commission will take over the role of the Ministry of Sports.

The FEC also approved the merger of the Ministry of Tourism with the Ministry of Culture and Creative Economy.”

The minister of Sports Development and others have with this lost their jobs.

Members of the House of Representatives Committee on Sports had earlier on Tuesday unanimously told the Minister of Sports, Senator John Owan Enoh, that his lamentations after Nigeria’s disastrous outing at the 2024 Paris Olympics are of no value and effect.

The lawmakers who were wholly disappointed in the comments/presentation of the minister concerning Nigeria’s Olympics no-medal show and other activities of the ministry in the past year vowed to get to the root of issues.

This is the House Committee on Sports under the Leadership of Honourable Kabiru Amadu has called for a robust planning strategy ahead of the next Olympics in 2028.
