Nigeria’s Prof. Lateef Sanni Leads AAU African Varsities Experts’ Networks

The Association of African Universities (AAU) has appointed Professor Lateef Oladimeji Sanni from Nigeria to lead pivotal networks under its African Universities Experts initiative.

Platforms Africa reports that Sanni got the AAU’s top job alongside another Professor from Nigeria, Wilfred Olusegun Alegbeleye, who was also named a member of the Coordinating Team for the African Universities Experts in Climate Resonance, Oceans, Sustainable Water Use, Marine Resources, and Fisheries Network.

The two appointees are Professors at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Nigeria.

Prof. Sanni, who was appointed as the Chairperson of the Coordinating Team for the African Universities Experts in Agro-Processing and Food Networks, is a global voice in Agro-Processing from Nigeria.

3. A globally recognised scholar in Food Science and Technology, Prof. Sanni specialises in Post-Harvest Technology and Food Processing.

4. He is a Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Food Science and Technology (NIFST) and a member of the International Association of Food Science and Technology (IAFoST), among other prestigious organisations.

5. He joined FUNAAB in 1993 as Assistant Lecturer, became a Professor of Food Science and Technology in 2008, presented his inaugural lecture in 2015, and became Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Development) in 2017.

6. He won the 2008 Consultative Group of International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) Award for Regional Technology Development in sub Saharan Africa.

7 He has over 27 years of experience in research, consultancy, and collaborations as a postharvest expert on tropical root crops mostly implemented by the International Institute of Tropical Root Crop and Natural Resources Institute, UK.

8. He has been a project leader to multi-million dollar EU/Gates Foundation-sponsored projects since 2008 testablished.

9. He served as a resource person for the World Bank upscaling of flash drying experience in West Africa. He was the principal investigator, the Food Developers Initiative and Food Science and Nutrition Network sponsored by the Association of African Universities.

10. In terms of contribution to knowledge, Sanni published 109 Technical Journal articles; 1 Patent; 30 Books, and 30 Conference proceedings. He has supervised in collaboration with colleagues’ well over 100 undergraduates, 17 Master and 24 PhDs. He is globally well cited with 4, 594, h-index of 34 and i10-index of 112 in his publications.

Wilfred Olusegun Alegbeleye

Meanwhile, Prof. Wilfred Olusegun Alegbeleye, a distinguished Professor of Fisheries and Aquaculture, was also named a member of the Coordinating Team for the African Universities Experts in Climate Resonance, Oceans, Sustainable Water Use, Marine Resources, and Fisheries Network.A former Dean of the Postgraduate School at FUNAAB, Prof. Alegbeleye is a leading voice in fisheries and aquaculture.

His affiliations included the Nigerian Association of Aquatic Scientists and the World Aquatic Scientific Society. His appointment underscores his commitment to research and sustainable innovation in aquatic sciences and climate-related issues.

The African Universities Experts Networks were established by the AAU to foster collaboration among universities across the continent. These networks aim to enhance teaching, learning, and research in key thematic areas while promoting staff and student mobility within Africa.Both appointments, which commenced on November 10, 2024, would span three years and are a testament to the excellence of FUNAAB’s academic community.
