. NIMASA gives update, SPDC shuts pipeline as cleanup still awaited 24 hours after spill
The oil spilled at the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) loading terminal, (SMI), in Bonny, Rivers State, has reached the shoreline, as incident clocked 24 hours.
Platforms Africa learnt that the spill, which occurred yesterday Saturday, December 14, 2024 has led to the shutdown of the export pipeline, which serves the terminal.
Shell is yet to respond to inquiries as at press time, but the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) which confirmed the incident to Platforms Africa, maintained that efforts are ongoing to assess the extent of the spill and determine necessary follow-up actions.
Head, Public Relations, NIMASA, Osagie Edward, told Platforms Africa that the spill has already reached the shoreline.

“SPDC has promptly shut down the affected pipeline and deployed containment booms to protect the neighboring communities,” he said.
“Although the spill has reached the shoreline, the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) is actively monitoring the situation from an emergency operations center.
“The agency is collaborating with SPDC and other relevant stakeholders to assess the extent of the spill and determine necessary follow-up actions.
“Members of the public are advised to remain calm as NIMASA is committed to mitigating the impact of the spill and restoring affected areas,” he concluded.
