Why Smoking, Drinking Are Not Sins – Pastor Damina

Pastor Abel Damina, leader of Power City International and Abel Damina Ministries, has said that smoking and drinking are not sinful acts.

Pastor Damina made this statement during his New Year’s Eve sermon, while also questioning the traditional interpretations of sin.

“I’ve told you alcohol is not a sin. I’ve told you cigarettes are not a sin. If you like, put it on the front page; I said it,” he said.

While not advocating for these behaviours, he urged his congregation to act with caution and discernment.

“Am I saying you should smoke? No. But you should have the sense that smoking harms your health. Am I saying you should drink alcohol? No. But understand that excessive drinking can lead to disgraceful situations,” he advised.

Damina said that sin stems from the heart, not from what one consumes while quoting verses from the Bible to buttress his arguments.

“Mark 7:18-21: What defiles a person is what comes out of their heart, not what goes into their body,” he said.

He also questioned the Biblical narrative of Adam and Eve, asserting, “Were you there when Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit? What makes you certain they ate anything at all?”

He added, “Do you not know that if Adam and Eve ate something, they would not be sinners? It is not what people eat that makes them sinners. I’ve told you that alcohol is not a sin.”
