‘After Selling Same Land To Three Buyers,’ Man Allegedly Commits Suicide

A middle-aged man named Tartor Ayihe is said to have killed himself by consuming pesticide following a disagreement over a piece of land he sold to three different people in Makurdi, Benue State’s Ayihe neighborhood, close to the International Market.

The dispute over the same piece of land’s several sales was allegedly the catalyst for the Wednesday night altercation.

The deceased sold a piece of land to three purchasers, according to community sources, which sparked outrage and local authorities stepping in.

One of the sources said, “The community leaders had summoned him to a meeting at the residence of the Zaki (chief) to address the crisis and understand how he managed to sell the same plot to three different people.”

During the meeting, the deceased reportedly requested to step out briefly, claiming he needed to retrieve something from his house.

“He went to three different provision shops looking for insecticide. After purchasing it, he went home, switched off his phone, and drank the entire bottle,” the source added.

When the deceased failed to return to the meeting, the chief sent some people to his house.

The community members hurried him to an unnamed hospital as soon as they arrived, but he was declared dead at the scene.
Catherine Anene, the spokesperson for the Benue State Police Command, confirmed the incident when contacted.
They found his lifeless body with the bottle of insecticide by his side.
“We received the report this morning, and operatives have been dispatched to investigate the matter,” Anene said.
