How Osun Monarch Performed Traditional ‘Lapping’ of Owa Obokun-elect

The Elegboro of Ijebu-Jesa, HRM Oba (Engr.) Moses Oluwafemi Agunsoye on Thursday performed the traditional lapping rites for the newly appointed Owa Obokun of Ijesa land, HIM Oba Clement Adesuyi Haastrup.

This is in line with an age-long custom of the people of Ijesa land. The rich Ijesa tradition came alive again as the Owa Obokun-elect continued his 90-day seclusion known as ‘Ipebi’.

Historically, strong love existed between the founders of Ijebu-Jesa and Ilesa, Agigiri and Ajibogun. The duo were brothers, sons of Oduduwa, born about three months apart; thus, the closeness and strong bond. They both left Ile-Ife to found their respective domains after Ajibogun returned from fetching the sea water to restore Oduduwa’s sight.

It later became a tradition and part of the enthronement process of a new Owa Obokun for the Ogboni Ijebu-Jesa, now known as Elegboro, to carry the new Owa on his laps and offer sincere prayers for a peaceful reign on the throne of their forefathers.

Recall that Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, had on Sunday, 29th December 2024, presented the staff of office and instrument of appointment to the newly-appointed Owa-Obokun of Ijesaland, Oba Adesuyi Haastrup in an event held at the entrance to Obokungbusi town hall, Ilesa. The ceremony was attended by prominent Nigerians and traditional rulers.

Oba Adesuyi Haastrup, 76, is a former deputy governor of Osun State. He succeeds late Oba Gabriel Adekunle Aromolaran who joined his ancestors in September 2024.
