MAPOLY Students Build Institution’s First-Ever Solar-Powered Vehicle

Students from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, MAPOLY, have made history as they successfully built the institution’s first-ever solar-powered vehicle.

According to a viral video by NTA news, the project, which was publicized earlier this week, showcasing the students’ technical and practical skills, was entirely designed, constructed, and welded by the students themselves.

As gathered, the project was also funded by Tertiary Education Trust Fund, TETFUND, standing as a testament to the institution’s commitment to practical learning and sustainable technology.

Speaking at the launching, the Rector of MAPOLY, Dr Babatunde Jolaoso emphasized the institution’s focus on technological advancements and skill-based education.

“As a polytechnic, our mandate is to equip students with the ability to develop solutions to real-world challenges. This solar-powered vehicle is proof of that mission,” the Rector stated.

In the same vein, the Head of the Department, HOD, of Mechanical Engineering department, Dr Oluseyi Orelaja, commended the students for their dedication and technical expertise.

He said, “this project is a demonstration of the skills and knowledge our students have acquired. It is a proud moment for MAPOLY and a testament to the impact of hands-on education,” he said.

The Director of the School of Engineering, Dr Olujide Adenekan, also highlighted the need for innovation beyond the classroom. “We have the talent and the resources, but the real challenge is translating these projects into market-ready solutions that can drive industrial growth and national development,” he noted.

MAPOLY, located in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Nigeria, has a long-standing reputation for excellence in technical and vocational education. Established in 1979, the institution has produced graduates who have made significant contributions in various fields, including engineering, technology, and entrepreneurship.

Over the years, MAPOLY has been at the forefront of innovative projects, with students and faculty members developing groundbreaking solutions in renewable energy, automation, and mechanics. Notably, past student-led innovations include the design of automated irrigation systems for agriculture and the development of energy-efficient machines for small-scale industries.

The success of the solar-powered vehicle project is therefore, yet, another example of MAPOLY’s commitment to equipping students with hands-on experience, ensuring they are prepared to tackle real-world challenges and contribute to Nigeria’s technological advancement.
