A coalition of friends and close associates of Gani Fawehinmi, the late human rights lawyer, has called for the immediate demolition of a four-storey structure near the legal icon’s residence in Ikeja GRA, Lagos.
The group, led by prominent figures including Femi Falana, senior advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Edetaen Ojo, director of Media Rights Agenda (MRA) and Lanre Arogundade, director of International Press Centre (IPC), staged a protest and press conference on Friday.
The group said the building constitutes a permanent threat to the security and safety of lives and property in Fawehinmi’s house.
“The so-called apartment building should be pulled down as the construction obviously violates Lagos State urban development and building regulations, particularly with regards to the mandatory setback requirement of at least three-meter space in-between buildings,” the statement said.

“The so-called apartment building should be pulled down because it menacingly towers above Chief Gani’s compound and could provide a safe haven for anyone with criminal and sinister intent against the family, especially given the obviously commercial nature of the property, which means that anyone with such sinister intentions can gain access to the building.

The group also expressed concerns that the towering structure could serve as a vantage point for criminal activities against Fawehinmi’s family.
