Club World Cup: How Al Hilal Defeated Man City In Seven-Goal Thriller

Al Hilal defeated Manchester City 4-3 in the second round of the ongoing Club World Cup.

The Saudi Arabian side produced one of the biggest upsets of the tournament in the seven-goal cracker at the Camping World Arena in Orlando, Florida, US, in the early hours of Tuesday.

A brace from Marcos Leonardo, a Kalidou Koulibaly header and another strike from Malcom were enough for Al Hilal to drown out goals from Bernardo Silva, Erling Haaland and Phil Foden in a match that spilt into extra time.

Silva gave Pep Guardiola’s side the lead in the ninth minute of the game with a simple tap-in after Al-Hilal failed to clear their line effectively.

The next goal of the game was not scored until the second half, and when it came, it arrived in droves.

Leonardo equalised for Al Hilal immediately after halftime before João Cancelo, a former Man City player, set Malcolm through from the halfway line with an outrageous trivela. Malcolm made no mistake in making it 2-1 for the Saudi club.

Shortly, Man City responded with another scruffy goal from Haaland, who reacted quickest to an errant ball and a confused defence to stab the ball into the net.

The match veered into extra time, and three minutes later, Koulibaly headed Al Hilal back into the lead off a corner kick.

Man City came up with a response once again. New signing Rayan Cherki picked out Folden’s late run into Al Hilal’s box, and the English midfielder trapped the ball into the net to draw the game level for the third time.

Leonardo, however, had the final say in the 112th minute. Ederson spilt Sergej Milinković-Savic’s header into the path of Leonardo, the goal gaping. The Brazilian striker nailed the match winner into the net.
