‘Bursted,’ How Commissioner Stood Surety For Drug Kingpin

The Kano State Commissioner for Transport, Ibrahim Namadi, has come under public scrutiny after standing as surety for a suspected notorious drug trafficker, Suleiman Danwawu.

Danwawu, who is currently facing eight-count charges related to drug trafficking filed by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), was granted bail on July 16 by Justice M.S. Shu’aibu of the Federal High Court in Kano.

The judge had imposed strict bail conditions, requiring the accused to produce a serving commissioner from the Kano State Executive Council as surety and to deposit ₦5 million with the court.

In a surprising move, Commissioner Namadi fulfilled the condition by submitting a sworn affidavit of means and a formal letter to the court dated July 18, in which he requested to serve as surety for Danwawu.

The letter, addressed to the Deputy Chief Registrar, read in part:

“I humbly wish to apply to stand as surety for the Defendant… I undertake to abide by the bail conditions imposed and promise to ensure the Defendant appears in court on all adjourned dates until the case is concluded.”

When contacted for comments, Namadi said he was in a meeting and would respond later.

As of the time of this report, he had not provided any further clarification.

Danwawu was arraigned on May 28 and has since been remanded in custody until the court approved his bail.

The case had been adjourned to June 16 for hearing of the bail application.

Due to the sensitivity of the case and its implications on public trust, the Kano branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has announced that
