On Friday alone the government began the crushing of apprehended motorcycles, at the Taskforce’s Crushing Centre, Ikeja.

About 2,000 motorcycles (okada) impounded in the first 72 hours since the commencement of the total ban on okada would be crushed.

The Commissioner for Transportation Dr Frederic Oladeinde, said the idea is to prevent the okada from finding their way into the streets.

Oladeinde, who supervised the crushing exercise, commended the security operatives for doing a great job in enforcing the total ban order across all the affected 15 local councils.

He said the crushing was to demonstrate government’s commitment to riding the okada menace from the roads.

The exercise, the commissioner said, brings to about 7,000 the total number of okada already crushed by the government in the last five months.

He disclosed that about 5,000 okada had earlier been crushed in the first quarter of Y2022.

Data compiled by Platforms Africa showed that the market price for a new motorcycle is between N300,000 and N350, 0000 while a ‘second hand’ Okada goes for N150,000. With an average of N200,000 per one, the 7,000 Okada destroyed by Lagos in the last fo months are more than N1.4 billion.

Oladeinde urged Lagosians to stop patronising okada and to use the alternative First and Last Mile Buses provided by the government.

Responding to complaints coming from places like Apapa, where the people are finding it tough because okadaoperation had been banned, the commissioner said the people should show more understanding as the directive is in the overall interest of all citizens of the state.
