The United Kingdom Commonwealth Shared Scholarship is a yearly award funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) to allow international students to enrol for their Master’s degree in any university in the United Kingdom at no cost.

Mercy Ojetunde narrated how her journey to bag two scholarships went.

According to her, she started exploring MSc/PhD opportunities abroad because she was determined to study for her Master’s and Doctorate (PhD) abroad with sponsorship from international organisations.

“I started my applications, and fortunately, I got the Commonwealth Shared Scholarships in 2021 to study MSc. Biotechnology at the University of the West of Scotland, UK,” she wrote on LinkedIn.

Mercy narrated further that her experience as a scholarship award winner and Master’s graduate of Biotechnology from the University of the West of Scotland helped her achieve the exceptional feat of clinching another scholarship award.

During her Master’s degree program in the United Kingdom, she submitted another application for a PhD Scholarship at West Virginia University in the United States. “Eventually, I got an interview invite from West Virginia University and was interviewed on the 30th of November, 2021,” she narrated.

The West Virginia University later awarded her a Fully Funded PhD scholarship in Biomedical Sciences (Immunology and Microbial Pathogenesis Program) and also gave her a graduate research assistantship position.

The young scholar thanked everyone that supported her dream throughout her journey. “You need people to help you get to your destination, build quality relationships,” she advised upcoming scholars.
