The Oyo State government has dropped all charges filled against Naomi Silekunola, the ex-wife of Ooni of Ife, and the Chairman of Agidigbo FM, Dr. Oriyomi Hamzat, over the death of 35 children in Ibadan.

Platforms Africa reports that the duo with the principal of Muslim College Bashorun, Ibadan, were arrested, detained and charged to Court after a stampede during a Christmas party they organised led to the death of the children.

The event took place at the Muslim College on December 27, 2024, Platforms Africa reports.

Speaking to jounalists on Thursday after the government made its decision known to the court, Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Biodun Aikomo, who led counsels of Oyo government to the Court, said that the action was taken because the accused showed empathy.

“We did what we did because after the unfortunate incident, the affected parties showed empathy and good compassion, and as far as we have also reached out to the affected family.

“The essence of persecution is not to kill people but to correct them. So, it is in the interest of justice to discontinue the charges, and that was what happened in the court today,” he said.
