Unknown gunmen, Wednesday, disrupted voting exercise at two polling units, as residents of Enugu State filed out to participate in the local government election.
The poll was conducted in the 17 local government areas of the State.
Platforms Africa reports that the exercise progressed peacefully across the State until news filtered in that unknown gunmen, who were against the conduct of any form of election, were wrecking havoc in Obeagu area of the State.
It was learnt that the gunmen invaded the polling units at Obeagu ward III and another polling unit at Akpugo in Nkanu West Local Government Area.
They were said to have disrupted the exercise, destroying electoral materials after chasing away voters.
Sources claimed that three persons were killed, while some others escaped with matchet cuts. At least two vehicles were also burnt in the incident.
An eyewitness who did not want his name in print said “the gunmen were shouting that they had warned that there should no longer be elections in any part of the South East.”
The police are yet to issue official reaction on the reported attack as of the time of filing this report.
