WATCHOUT: Crime’ll Increase; 9 Tips To Stay Alive, Safe This Yuletide, Beyond

CEO of Background Check International (BCI), Mr Kola Olugbodi, a member of Platforms Africa led the forum’s e-Discourse on the topic “On Your Own: ABYSMAL Police Citizen Ratio in Africa And Tips on Personal Security Before, During and After Yuletide”. Excerpts;

May we have a clear understanding of what crime and security is all about?

In response to your question, crime involves actions that violate laws, while security aims to prevent and respond to threats, protecting individuals, communities, and assets. Crime and security intersect as efforts to control and reduce criminal activities contribute to maintaining safety and order. This involves measures such as law enforcement, surveillance, and crime prevention strategies to safeguard society.

Last year, during the e-Discourse, we had the prediction that there was going to be a surge in crime in Nigeria, and it came to pass. What made this to be so?

Thank you, once again, for including me in the e-Discourse session again this year.

Predicting a rise in crime during the 2022 Yuletide wasn’t because I am a prophet but rather a common trend.

Recklessness in preparations for Christmas and year-end celebrations contributes to this, as some unintentionally draw attention to themselves by displaying their wealth and riches.

And, in this current year, given the challenging times we are experiencing at the moment in Nigeria and across Africa, exercising caution is paramount for everyone as this year’s Yuletide approaches.

So, what should we expect in terms of safety and security challenges, as this year’s Yuletide approaches?

I foresee a downward shift in safety and security challenges as this year’s Yuletide approaches.

The economic conditions in Nigeria and several African countries have led to very harsh living conditions due to exorbitant prices of various household items, food stuff, and electronics. These high costs will definitely negatively impact the usual festive celebrations.

The economic hardship may lead to subdued festivities and a decreased likelihood of people travelling from cities to villages or country homes this December.

Everyone’s coat has been forced to be cut to everyone’s sizes due to the bad economy.

Despite these speculations, it is still crucial for everyone to prioritize and implement necessary safety and security measures as December approaches.

Against the background of your previous response, what is your assessment of safety and security consciousness in Africa?

Assessing safety and security consciousness in Africa is complex due to diverse socio-economic and political contexts across countries and regions.

There’s variability in awareness levels, with positive aspects including community vigilance, preservation of traditional safety practices, and government initiatives like community policing and awareness campaigns in certain countries.

What are the general causes of insecurity in Nigeria, and for that matter, Africa?

Insecurity in Nigeria and Africa results from a complex interplay of economic challenges like poverty and unemployment, political instability, social factors including education disparities, historical legacies, security threats such as terrorism, environmental issues like weak institutions, and global influences.

Addressing these challenges requires multifaceted strategies, encompassing economic development, political stability, and social cohesion, with cooperation at various levels crucial for effective solutions.

What does poverty have to do with this?

According to Aristotle, “Poverty is the parent of revolution and crime.”

Poverty significantly contributes to insecurity in Nigeria and Africa by driving individuals toward criminal activities and fostering social discontent, civil unrest, and youth unemployment. It weakens social infrastructure, limiting access to education and healthcare, and can lead to resource competition and corruption.

Addressing poverty is vital for improving overall security and requires comprehensive strategies, including economic development, job creation, and social support programs.

What is the state of Policing in Africa?

Policing in Africa is a complex landscape with diverse challenges and positive initiatives. Across the continent, resource constraints pose a significant hurdle, limiting funding, equipment, and training for law enforcement agencies.

Corruption within police forces is another prevalent issue, eroding public trust and impeding effective law enforcement efforts. Inadequate training further compounds these challenges, affecting officers’ ability to navigate complex situations.

Political interference and insufficient access to modern technology also hinder the effectiveness of policing in some regions.

Despite these challenges, there are positive aspects and emerging trends. Some countries have embraced community policing initiatives, fostering collaboration between law enforcement and local communities. International cooperation is on the rise, with collaborative efforts improving the capacity to address transnational crime. Additionally, reform initiatives are underway in several nations, aiming to enhance professionalism, accountability, and public trust within police forces.

Emerging trends include the increasing adoption of technology, such as digital forensics and data analytics, which contribute to improving investigative capabilities. Collaborations with international partners for training programs are becoming more common, enhancing the skills of law enforcement personnel.

Do we have enough police in Africa?

The sufficiency of police personnel in Africa varies across regions, with statistics indicating that many areas, including Nigeria, face a shortage of personnel.

Nigeria’s current police strength is just over 370,000 officers, which is insufficient based on a ratio of one police officer to about 600 citizens.
Influenced by factors like population size and crime rates, adequate staffing is crucial for effective law enforcement.

What are the implications of this?

The implications of police shortage in Nigeria are compounded by a range of severe security challenges, including armed robbery, kidnappings for ransom, ritual killings, Fulani herdsmen attacks, assassinations, terrorism, insurgency, internet fraud, and Ponzi schemes.

Police shortages can further lead to increased crime rates, limited crime prevention efforts, and strain on existing officers, potentially resulting in burnout. Emergency response may be compromised, and specialized units might face difficulties.

Addressing these shortages is essential for maintaining public safety, effective law enforcement, and fostering community trust. Adequate staffing, training, and resource allocation are crucial components of a robust and functional police force anywhere in the world.

What are the tips on personal security before, during, and after Yuletide?

In addition, be aware of real-world risks such as high transport fares for those that will be traveling from one place to another, a surge in road accidents happens as Yuletideapproaches, reckless driving influenced by alcohol, and heightened burglar and car theft incidents.

Exercise caution on designated red zone roads that are prone to kidnappers attack, be wary of accepting lifts when travelling.

Take extra precautions against theft, particularly with items like chickens and goats that are often targeted during the Christmas season.
