Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed Major General Farouk Yahaya as the new Chief of Army Staff.
Yahaya, described as a gallant soldier, replaces Lt General Ibrahim Attahiru, who died in an air crash in Kaduna last Friday.

Attahiru who died alongside 10 other officers in the plane crash was buried on last Saturday.
Prior to his appointment, Major General Yahaya was the General Officer Commanding 1 Division of the Nigerian Army in Kaduna and the incumbent Theatre Commander of the Counter Terrorism Counter Insurgency military outfit in the North-East, code named Operation HADIN KAI.
A terse statement by the Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Oyema Nwachuku, said on Thursday.
