No fewer than 275 inmates who escaped during attack on Oyo Medium Security Custodial Centre, in Oyo State, have been recaptured.
A report by Platforms Africa quoted the spokesperson of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Oyo State Command, Anjorin Olanrewaju,to have said that about 575 inmates are still at large.
A source at the Correctional home told Platforms Africa that some of the fleeing inmates were re-arrested in beer parlours, prostitute enclaves, among others in Oyo while 13 were re-arrested in Osun state
The prison was attacked by yet to be identified gunmen at about 2130hrs on Friday 22nd October, 2021.
The gunmen were said to have arrived the Centre heavily armed with sophisticated weapons and after a fierce encounter with officers on guard, gained entrance into the yard using dynamite to blast the wall.
While all the awaiting trial detainees were forced out of custody, the cells housing the convicts and the female inmates were not vandalised.
Olanrewaju said, following the directives of the Controller General of Corrections, Haliru Nababa mni, the State Controller, Noel Ailewon has commenced the process of search and recapture after visiting the scene of the incident.
He assures that no effort will be spared to recapture the fleeing inmates even as he solicits for credible intelligence to aid Security agencies in tracking down the fugitives.
Platforms Africa reports that the Oyo Custodial Centre was established in 2007 with a capacity of 160 inmates but at the time of attack, had a total population of 907. Of this number, awaiting trial persons were 837 representing 92% with just 64 convicts.
The Osun Police Command, on Sunday said 13 of the inmates who escaped from Abologo Correctional Centre in Oyo, on Friday, have been re-arrested in Ejigbo, Osun.

SP Yemisi Opalola, Osun Police Spokesperson, confirmed the development to newsmen and stated that the inmates were arrested on Saturday night, adding that they would soon be transferred to the Police State Criminal Investigation Department.
“God has helped the Command to re-arrest 13 escaped prisoners from Abologo Correctional Center Oyo, Oyo State.
It was learnt that the inmates were wandering in the town on Saturday, when policemen on patrol arrested them.
The Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, had earlier on Sunday, promised that all escaped inmates from the Oyo correctional facility would be re-arrested, during his visit to the correctional facility.
Aregbesola equally said 446 of the 907 escapees from the correctional centre had been recaptured, whilst 69 never left the facility, adding that 392 inmates are still at large.
