LOC highlights achievements, charges Nigerian government on grassroots sports development + link with Segun Odegbami
One of the top Grassroots sports competition in Nigeria, Wasinmi Summer Championship, has entered into its sixth season with the Local Organising Committee (LOC) charging the Nigerian government on grassroots sports development, Platforms Africa reports.
Speaking at a press briefing to herald the competition, Chairman of the LOC, Coach Victor Damilola Agbagu, and a member, Mr. Ola Sunday, who collectively described the Wasinmi championship as “one of the best in the whole federation if not the best,” highlighted achievements of the sports fiesta in the last six years.

The soccer championship, Agbagu said, has been in existence for about half a decade now.

“The.programme helps in securing scholarship for young talent within and outside.Wasinmi. This championship has also helped the settlers in booming their businesses.
“To point to you another important thing about wasinmi summer champhionship, this is the only soccer championship where six category will play matches to the.final in just 2weeks.
“One of the benefactors of soccer championship who gives scholarship to.young talent is the.mathematician himself, Chief Segun Odegbami. Among the success stories is that over 7-10 youths are abroad combining sports with.education. All on scholarship from their benefactors, basically because they have been able to showcase their different talents.
“Most impprtantly coaches use to pick up youths from this championship. So many youths were scouted out from wasinmi summer soccer champhionship.
“On the issues of coach who has been able to attend training and now handling better teams now, all these in the name of wasinmi soccer youth.championship.
“In 2017, 22 teams participated, year 2018, 42 teams participated, and in 2019, 64 teams participated.
“In 2020, 98 teams participated, 2021, 104 teams participated and final this year competition 2022, 150 teams will be participating in all the 6 categories. The categories are under 10 categiries,13, 15, 17, and free age not excluding the female category too.”
On the issue of security, the.chairman of the LOC has guarantee every team effective securty in all their camps.
