The Substation 1 of the Port Harcourt refinery has been energized and will power 14 others, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) has declared.
Platforms Africa reports that this, contained n the company’s latest update on the level of progress made in the refinery’s rehabilitation project, is in a response to the countdown on the deluvery deadline Gordon the refinery, being led by this credible media group.
The Port Harcourt refinery is gearing up for its startup and will need 15 substations to power its operations, the report added.
The Lead Electrical Engineer of the refinery rehabilitation project, Chukwudi Iweha, said: “So far, the team has laid 64 kilometres of new electrical cables to facilitate this task, with 65% of these cables sourced locally.

According to the report, substation 1 will power all other 14 substations and it has been energized. Among these substations, Substation 1 serves as the primary power hub for both the old and new refineries.
It is set to receive electricity from gas turbine generators by mid-December 2023, supplying power to various areas within the refinery complex.
He said: “Right now, we are at the testing phase, and we hope to finish the testing phase in a week. Once we finish the testing phase, however I’m sure we can commission here. I’m very sure in less than two weeks time, all the lights will be on here, and the plant will be energized. We call it energizing substation.
“Over 100 staff members worked on installing the switchgear panels, comprising high and low-voltage panels and motor control centre panels, capable of handling 11,000 volts of electricity”, he stated.

The control room, a vital part of the refinery’s operations, is now operational, the Lead Instrumentation and Automation Engineer, Taiwo Igbosanu said.
With less than 21 days to the end of the year, the 53-year-old Port Harcourt refinery is currently under reconstruction with the aim of increasing local production of petrol for domestic use.
Although there is anxiety on the possibility of meeting the December 2023 targets, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) said the rehabilitation works is at advanced stage.

Port Harcourt Refinery Ready This December, NNPC Insists
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC), has maintained that the Port Harcourt Refining Company (PHRC) will start operations this December despite pessimism expressed by many Nigerians.
Managing Director of the facility, Ibrahim Onoja, who gave an update on the ongoing work at the plant in a television broadcast, noted that the procurement process for the rehabilitation of the refiner is now 98 per cent completed.
