Oil Firms, Banks Missing In 25 Best Places To Work In Africa List

The Best Places to Work organisation has unveiled its highly anticipated list of the top 25 most outstanding employers in Africa for the year 2023.

Platforms Africa reports that no oil company made the list while all major bank, with the exception of Ecobank, were conspicuously missing.

The programme, known for recognising exemplary workplaces, conducted extensive evaluations encompassing over 500 organisations operating across the continent.

This year’s findings highlight a trend of continued investment by leading organisations in Africa to cultivate highly-engaged workforces. The top performers demonstrated an average engagement score of 80 percent, showcasing a marginal decrease of 1 point from last year’s average. Moreover, this score stands significantly higher, a notable 16 points above the continent’s average engagement score of 64 percent.

The increased participation of companies in this assessment underscores the growing commitment within African organisations to prioritise employee satisfaction and well-being as part of their operational ethos.

Topping this year’s distinguished ranking is Novo Nordisk, a renowned global pharmaceutical company, closely followed by AstraZeneca, a prominent biopharmaceutical entity operating extensively across several African nations.

Securing the third position is Les Eaux Minérales d’Oulmès, a leading enterprise in bottled water production. Companies were considered based on their exceptional employer status in at least one country across the continent.

The ranking methodology was primarily driven by feedback gathered from employees through anonymous surveys. Additionally, an HR assessment scrutinised the people management practices against the highest workplace standards.

Hamza Idrissi, Programme Manager for the Best Places to Work in Africa, lauded this year’s top employers, noting, ‘These companies have excelled in various HR performance facets, emphasising a purpose-driven culture and execution capability.

They’ve showcased remarkable responsiveness, agility, and the ability to maintain high employee engagement levels, fostering an environment where employees thrive and advocate for the brand.’

The annual programme serves as a pivotal platform for partnering with numerous organizations across diverse industries in Africa. Its objective lies in assisting these entities to gauge, compare, and enhance their HR practices, offering them essential tools and expertise for effecting sustainable and impactful change within their organisational frameworks.
