Dirty details of controversial Morocco-Beat-Nigeria gaffe by Voice of Nigeria (VoN) that made tongues wagging + What speakers on Platforms Africa forum said on the report that has set the Internet on fire

Nigeria staged an extraordinary second-half comeback to defeat hosts Morocco 3-2 to lift their 10th TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) crown, which they had tagged: “Mission X,” before the commencement of the competition.

In front of home fans, the Atlas Lionesses got off to a dream start at the Stade Olympique in Rabat, Morocco on Saturday night against the Super Falcons.

With just 12 minutes on the clock, captain Ghizlane Chebbak opened the scoring with a brilliant strike from outside the box, curling the ball low past Nigerian goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie.

Things got even better for the Atlas Lionesses in the 24th minute when Sanaâ Mssoudy doubled Morocco’s lead.

A slick pass from Ibtissam Jraidi found Mssoudy in space, and the forward made no mistake with a composed finish into the bottom right corner.

Nigeria appeared stunned and went into the break trailing by two goals.

The comeback began just after the hour mark when a VAR review handed Nigeria a lifeline.

A handball by Nouhaila Benzina resulted in a penalty, which was coolly dispatched by Esther Okoronkwo to make it 2-1.

From that moment, the momentum swung Nigeria’s way.

In the 71st minute, Okoronkwo turned provider, slipping a neat ball into the path of Folashade Ijamulusi, who drilled a left-footed effort into the bottom corner to bring Nigeria level.

With the match heading towards extra time, Nigeria found the winner.

A well-worked set-piece situation saw Okoronkwo once again involved, delivering a clever assist to Joe Echegini, who calmly slotted home in the 88th minute to seal a dramatic turnaround.

Despite of the late pressure, the Super Falcons held firm through a tense final few minutes of stoppage time to clinch a 10th title in 13 editions of the tournament.

VoN gaffe And How It Set Internet On Fire

The Voice of Nigeria, which is the official international broadcasting station of Nigeria, reported that Morocco defeated Nigeria.

A gaffe that instantly figuratively set the Internet ablaze was described as a disastrous editorial judgment!

Reacting to the report, which later turned out to have been published before the match even ended, opinion moulders on Platforms Africa forum cautioned newsmen against misinformation.

Expressing doubt over whether there was any actual “editorial judgment” in the report, Distinguished communication expert, Dr. Paul Arinze said that this “is simply about stark facts.”

He continued; “If you check, VON probably had a large budget for covering this event, so large the reporter was busy shopping or something when the final scores came in! And everyone else who should’ve checked had travelled to their villages or anything, after all it’s a weekend.

“Worms have eaten the conscience of some people, especially in public service, along with their sense of duty!”

Another veteran journalist on the forum, Mr. Yakubu Lawal,  added; “May be the Reporter filled his reports before the end of the match. Morocco was in control leading 2 goals ahead into the second half.

“We started scoring in the 60 plus minutes and equalise in 77 minutes and the winning goal came in 87 or so minutes, so it possible VON took it that we can’t win haven down by 2 goals into the second half he simply file his Reporter and went to bed or took some drink to make himself Happy.”

In his reaction on the Platforms Africa forum, Professor Ayo Ojebode said; “Very sad indeed for our own Voice of Nigeria…”

Another resource person on the forum, Mike Oduniyi said; “It should be expected when, nowadays, our reporters/journalists attached too many sentiments and emotions to their jobs.

“I could imagine what that reporter had in mind filing the first half results of a major international football tournament as if it were basketball or cricket.”

Pleading anonymity, a retired journalist who once worked with VoN concluded; “My brother, it’s such an embarrassment. VON management is not taking it lightly with the guy who uploaded the story. I have retired from service but I was heartbroken last night when I saw the story. The correction has been done. But the damage has also been done.”
