Nigeria’s Top Petroleum Engr., Dr. Saka Matemilola, Is New Olowu of Owu

Meet former chairman, Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) and associate Professor at African University of science and technology newly announced as the 14th monarch for ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, ex-Judge of the World Court, Bola Ajibola, and former governor Ibikunle Amosun’s ancestral home

 

The Ogun State Government has announced a top petroleum engineer and an associate Professor at African University of Science and Technology, Dr. Saka Matemilola, as the new Olowu of Owu in Abeokuta North Local Government Area of the state.

Platforms Africa reports that Dr. Metemilola, a former Chairman of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), Nigeria Council, was, according to his LinkedIn profile, a manager at Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) between January 2012 and April 2013.

Nigeria’s former President Olusegun Obasanjo, ex-judge of the World Court, Prince Bola Ajibola, and former governor of Ogun state, Ibikunle Amosum, are among sons of Owu. Obasanjo holds the traditional chieftaincy title of Balogun of Owu, Platforms Africa reports.

The Olowu of Owu stool became vacant following the demise of Oba Adegboyega Dosunmu, in December 2021.

At the State Executive Committee’s meeting held on Monday evening, Matemilola was announced as the 14th Olowu of Owu.

Governor Dapo Abiodun’s Chief Press Secretary, Kunle Somorin, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday.

Somorin added that the government approved the appointments of other new traditional rulers to fill the vacant stools in the state.

He added, “The state government equally announced the approval of some persons into vacant chieftaincy positions, while approval was also granted for the change of a chieftaincy title.

“The decision for the approval was taken during the State Executive Committee meeting held on Monday evening.”

Dr. Saka Matemilola, has a Ph.D in engineering at the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom.

He hold BSc and MSc in engineering at the University of Ibadan.

The registered member of COREN is a felloiw of SPE, Nigeria Council, and a fellow, Cambridge Philosophical Society.

He was with Shell, serving in the company’s resource volume management between January 2012 and April 2013.

Matemilola is an associate Professor at the African University of science and technology and a visiting professor at the institute if Petroleum Studies, University of Port Harcourt.
