‘Iku Baba Yeye!’ Seven Things To Know About New Alaafin, Oba Abimbola Owoade

The Oyo state governor, Seyi Makinde, has appointed Prince Abimbola Akeem Owoade as the new Alaafin of Oyo.

Platforms Africa presents seven things hitherto unknown about the new alaafin of Oyo, whose forebears are known among the Yorubas as Iku baba yeye, the second in command only to the gods.

1. Prince Akeem attended Baptist High School, Saki, before earning a National Diploma in Mechanical Engineering from The Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro (1994 — 1997).

2. He had his Higher National Diploma in the same field from The Polytechnic, Ibadan (1999 — 2001). This strong educational background has honed his analytical and technical skills.

3. Prince Akeem Owoade pursued further education in the United Kingdom, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Sunderland in 2008 and a Master of Science in the same field from Northumbria University in 2012.

4. The new Alaafin will turn 50 this year.

5. Prince Akeem’s career spans multiple continents. He previously worked as a Planning Engineer at Oil Company in Glasgow, UK. He currently serves as a Project Coordinator at Manitoba Hydro, Canada.

6. In addition, he is the president of 100279 Manitoba Limited, a company specializing in real estate and financial services.

7. The new Alaafin who hails from the royal Owoade-Agunloye family of Oyo, is one of the surviving children of Pa Rasaki Ibiyosi Owoade. He was officially confirmed as the new Alaafin of Oyo on Friday, 10 January 2025, by Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State.
