Slash Varsity, Poly Tuition Fees By 50%, Muslim Students To Tinubu, Govs

The Muslim Student’s Society of Nigeria (MSSN) has called on the Federal and State Governments to provide palliatives for education by reducing tuition and all other fees by 50% in all federal and State tertiary Institutions.

Amir, MSSN Lagos State Area Unit, Nurudeen Youssuph, who made the call in Lagos, during a 3-in-1 programme including Mathematics and science quiz competition, transitional conference and honouring of 81 first class Muslim students-graduate from LASU, maintained that Nigerians are going through a lot and urged the Nigerian government to improve on palliatives.

“It is a fact that our dear country is going through a difficult time with prices of goods and services soaring high by the day after the removal of fuel subsidy and the floating of the naira by FG. We recognize that the Govemment is doing everything possible to address the situation with their policies,” he said.

‘We are imploring federal and state governments to improve on palliatives, especially on education and health care. We are calling on the Federal and State Governments to provide palliatives for education by reducing tuition and all other fees by 50% in all federal and state tertiary institutions.

“Likewise, the increment in school fees in government tertiary institutions has made many indigent students drop out of school. We welcome and appreciate the introduction of student loans proposed by the government but as a critical stakeholder in the education sector and a faith-based organization, we are calling on federal and state governments to ensure that student loans are interest-free to allow Muslim Students to benefit from the opportunity”, he added.

Youssuph also commended the Lagos State Government of Governor Babajide Sanwo Olu and Deputy Governor Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat’s efforts on education infrastructure and recruitment of teachers.

He said, “We commend the Lagos State Government of Governor Babajide Sanwo Olu and Deputy Governor Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat’s efforts on its stride in education infrastructure and recruitment of teachers. However, we are appealing to the Lagos State Government to give top priority to the recruitment of more Arabic and Islamic Studies teachers for our junior and senior secondary schools as there are very few teachers left after the retirement of many IRS teachers in recent years.”

The out-going Amir pleaded with the incoming administration to prioritize the spiritual well-being of the members. He also urged them to improve leadership training and focus on vocational skills acquisition of the members.

“I want to implore the incoming administration to prioritize the spiritual well-being of our members, improve leadership training, and focus on soft, hard, and vocational/digital skills acquisition for our members as mentioned by Pro. Pantami, in his book “SKILLS RATHER JUST DEGREES.

“The incoming administration should give utmost priority to revitalizing the MUSTRUF (Muslim Trust Fund) and AL-IQTISOD Cooperative. These two entities were created to help provide education support to indigent students and help members in saving for rainy days through the communal effort of a cooperative society. The incoming administration should also work on full utilization of the digital training centre for our members with a proper roadmap.” he said.

Platforms Africa reports that various schools from Lagos participated in the quiz competition, which was supported by Prof. Isa Ali Pantami. The schools, among others, are Kings College, Command secondary school, and Al-Islamideen private school.

Abdulazeez Abdulhameed and Olawale Abdulwaheed of Kings College emerged winners of the Prof. Isa Ali Ibrahim (Pantami) Mathematics and Science Quiz competition with command secondary school announced as the runner-up of the competition.

Furthermore, The Lagos MSSN honours 81 first-class Muslim students graduate from LASU, including Aminat Yusuf, the overall best graduating student with a record (5.0 CGPA).
