What to know about the thesis that earned the Radio Netherlands Training Centre-trained broadcaster highest degree in communication at Lagos State University
A news editor with the Lagos State Television (LTV), Falilat Wuraola Okunnu, has bagged a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) in communication.
Platforms Africa reports that Okunnu successfully defended her Ph.D thesis in broadcasting at the School of postgraduate studies, Lagos State University (LASU).
Her PhD. thesis examined the relevance of children television programmes to the educational development agenda of Lagos State Government.

With over two decades of experience in broadcasting, Okunnu started her academic journey with a first degree in Mass Communication from the pioneer Lagos State University School of Communication, earning B.Sc Mass Communication with specialisation in Broadcasting.
Thereafter, she proceeded to the National Open University of Nigeria for her Masters degree in mass communication. She attended the prestigious Radio Netherlands Training Centre (RNTC), Harleem, Netherlands for Digital Content Creation programme in 2023.
Her appetite for more knowledge influenced her decision to enrol for a PhD. in Communication Studies at the Lagos State University School of Communication, now Lagos State University Faculty of Communication and Media Studies Her PhD. thesis examined the relevance of children television programmes to the educational development agenda of Lagos State Government.
How it all started
She commenced her professional career in the broadcast media industry working as an Intern at the African Independent Television, later as a Non-Linear Editor with the Nigerian Television Authority, Channel 10.
She later moved to Aims Communication, a media production outfit in Lagos as a Programme Producer and Editor. In 2014, she conceptualised Ramadan Diet programme, a nutrition television programme aimed at enlightening fasting Muslims about the nutritional benefits of their diet during Ramadan Fasting.
Since its debut on the Nigerian Television Authority NTA Abeokuta in 2014, the programme has been aired on Ogun State Television and Lagos Television. The programme has continued to attract attention of fasting Muslims globally. She joined Lagos Television as a News Editor in 2016.
She is a broadcast journalist, film editor, programme producer, presenter and trainer.
She was a member of the COVID-19 health message creation unit responsible for the conceptualisation and design of COVID-19 health messages in Lagos State.
She has delivered trainings on news coverage, media content production, and media relations for academic institutions of learning and training professional training institutes.
Tributes for Tear-Rubber Scholar
Colleagues and friends of the new scholars have taken to the social media to pen tributes for her.
Jubril Folami, who once worked with Okunnu in LTV 8, wrote; “Congratulations to the latest Doctor of philosophy in Communication Studies, Dr Fadhilah Raheem Okunnu and the entire her family. Special thanks to my brother Dr Abd Ganiyu okunnu for his immense support in making this a reality. Barakalahu fikum Dr and Dr Mrs okunnu, Ogajuuuuu.”
Akintunde Adegbenga Abdulraheem added; “Freshly minted Dr Falilat Raheem Okunnu from LASU school of communication… Another Lasusoc scholar who has been in the broadcast industry for over a decade… I’m highly delighted to celebrate my sister…”
