Lady Breaks 65 Year-Old NSE Record As First Female President

Madam President: What to know about Margaret Oguntala, first female topmost executive in the Nigerian Society of Engineers’ history

 

The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) has elected Margaret Oguntala as the new president of the association.

According to a statement obtained by Platforms Africa, NSE said Oguntala is the first female president of the association in its 65-year existence.

Oguntala will take over from Tasiu Sa’ad Gidari-Wudil, the outgoing president of NSE.

“It’s a new dawn in the history of the Nigeria Society of Engineers, as the incumbent and 33rd president, Engr. Tasiu Sa’ad Gidari-Wudil, hands over the baton of leadership to the 34th and first female president in the 65 years history of the NSE,” the statement reads.

“Engr. Mrs. Margaret Aina Oguntala FNSE, popularly known as the “Erelu worldwide” and regarded as the mother of the modern day engineering in Nigeria by young engineers in Nigeria took the engineering world by storm when she against all odds broke the 65 years monopoly of male engineers as presidents of the prestigious association.

Tasiu Sa’ad Wudil who under his leadership produced the first black man as the president of the world federation of Engineering organisation and also made history as the first president to hand over to a female president.”

Madam President’s profile of excellence

Margaret Aina Ogutala obtained a B.ENG degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Benin in 1986. She was inducted as a Corporate member of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) in 1996, registered with the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) the same year, and later became a Fellow of NSE in 2010.

A Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Chemical
Engineers (NSChE), Margaret is also a Fellow of the Institute of Management Consultants (IMC).

She was the Chairman of NSE Ikeja Branch (2009 –
2011). She was also a three-term Vice President (2014, 2015 & 2016) of the national body.

She is the recipient of over 53 awards. In Engineering, she has received the coveted NSE Presidential awards ten times as well as APWEN (Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria) Innovative Leader Award.

Over the years, Margaret has grown to become a female engineering leader who inspires, teaches, and mentors the upcoming generations. In recognition of her mentoring role, she was appointed the Matron of Nigerian Universities Engineering Students Association (NUESA).
